Tera Hatfield

My background is diverse, spanning product systems design, architecture, spatial computing, and brand design. My education in architecture focused on designing urban systems, ecologies, and experiences that support and adapt over time to the needs of individuals and communities.

That training in telescoping between altitudes, scales, and interaction models has been crucial to my work and my success. I primarily focus on solving problems where few frameworks or guidelines exist. I am often called “non-traditional” (and on one occasion “weird”) but I view this range of skills as vital to the ethical and informed design of public communications, products, and civic spaces.

My work in various design fields and agencies has often required a mixture of mediums and knowledge to responsibly design at the intersection of technology and design—to understand how we as humans experience and interact with place and products, with one another, and in the near future, with AI. I take that responsibility very seriously.

Leadership

I love it when a plan comes together, and that’s why I pride myself on providing transparent and supportive team leadership that makes space for curiosity, feedback and autonomy. No contributions are small; asking questions and rapid iteration are central to a designer’s core practice.

All that said, I am adamant about work-life balance for myself and fellow team members. Adventures feed the heart and the brain. I like to skate, surf, and bike (among many other pursuits) in my spare time with my trusty pup at my side. Say hello—I fight for good.
