Google Looker Studio is an enterprise platform for BI, data applications, and embedded analytics that helps you explore and share insights in real time. Customers like Accenture, Fox, MLB, The Hearst Corp and Red Bull use Looker insights to accelerate informed decision making and create custom data rich applications.
Following their acquisition by Google, Looker knew it needed a more effective learning approach for its enterprise customers. Onboarding was slow and the product support team was swamped. Looker Connect is a new role based, socially connected on-line platform. I led UX for Looker Connect along with 2 other senior designers. The cross-functional team encompassed over 50 individuals, representing stakeholder groups within Looker and Google Cloud. I led workshops, D-suite stakeholder reviews and the development of the overall MVP UX framework. As a design director, I also led the strategic translation of the Google brand and Material design guidelines in order to reimagine Looker’s visual aesthetic within their new parent brand.
Our goal was to set a new bar for BI platforms, focusing on customized onboarding at scale. To do so we needed to accelerate onboarding and adoption to match customer needs while reducing support load. Through a series of internal discovery workshops, we uncovered novel ways to generate and sustain learner momentum. We tailored the experience to multiple roles and personal learning styles. We also found new ways to integrate community for immediate peer to peer connections and learning support.
The impact was immediate with a significant decrease in DCL and “how do I?” support tickets. We surveyed enterprise beta customers: 80% of customers reported that Connect made it hands down easier to learn Looker and 73% reported an increase in their overall learning confidence. The Looker Connect Beta ran from 2021-2023. The Looker BI transitioned all learning services to Google Cloud in 2023.
Looker Connect won the 2022 TSIA Star innovation award for learning.
